Villa and NYCFC Dominate in Home Opener

by ANTHONY J. MERCED

David Villa and NYCFC dominated DC United in their 2017 home opener 4-0. Villa scored two goals as the team cruised to one of the more resounding performances under head coach Patrick Vieira.

“It was a really good team performance,” said Vieira following the game. “I’m happy with the number of goals of course, but I’m happy as well with not conceding any goals. The most important thing for me is we keep to our principle and we played some really good football today.”

The scoring started early as Rodney Wallace tallied the first goal for NYCFC in 2017 in the eighth minute. Wallace found Harrison in a dangerous spot who rang a shot off the cross bar but Wallace was there to clean up for the goal. Villa doubled the lead in the 28th minute when Wallace crossed the ball into the box. Villa headed the ball past Bill Hamid to extend the lead. Maxi Moralez would make it 3-0 before the half.

NYCFC would continue their dominance in the second half on the way to over 60 percent possession throughout the game. David Villa would score again in the 75th minute to add an exclamation to NYCFC’s opening weekend.

Next up NYCFC will play the Montreal Impact at Yankee Stadium. Montreal has yet to win this season.
