Report: New York Red Bulls to sign Gonzalo Veron to DP contract

Just days after signing veteran Englishman Shaun Wright-Phillips, the New York Red Bulls are ready to make another splash in their midfield.

Argentina media outlet TyC Sports and Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl are reporting that the Red Bulls have completed a deal bringing Argentina’s Gonzalo Veron to Harrison. According to the reports, it will be a Designated Player contract worth $2.2 million.

The former San Lorenzo striker scored seven goals in 59 matches with his Argentine club since joining 2012.  His club won the Copa Libertadores in 2014, although Veron served mostly a bench player for the side.

There’s no doubt that Veron will provide quickness to an already speed New York lineup. The 25-year old will join both Wright-Phillips brothers and winger Lloyd Sam, who aren’t shy on pace themselves.

Veron will be now be the second Designated Player on the Red Bulls roster, joining fellow striker Bradley Wright-Phillips. The team have had two DP slots available since the departures of Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill after the conclusion of the 2014 MLS campaign.
