Bronx, N.Y. – An impressive second half display by Rodney Wallace and Maxi Moralez led NYCFC to a 3-1 win at Yankee Stadium over Atlanta United on Sunday afternoon. The home team converted on a whopping 11 shots on goal with Atlanta being unable to handle the onslaught. The win moves New York City into a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with 16 points through nine games.

The first half was an even contest with NYCFC unable to dominate possession the way fans are accustomed to seeing. They were still dangerous as a combination of passes between Moralez and Wallace opened up space for David Villa to score the game’s first goal in the 17th minute. For Villa it was his sixth goal of the season and a welcome return following the game he missed due to illness in Columbus. The score wouldn’t remain in NYCFC’s favor as Carlos Carmona fired a shot from the top of the box past goalkeeper Sean Johnson in the 39th minute. As the whistle blew to end the first half, both teams were even in most major categories.

It was the second half where the game went off the rails for Atlanta. NYCFC pressed heavily to start the second 45 with three shots in the first 20 seconds. They would remain on offense, finding the back of the net in the 59th minute when Rodney Wallace put in a low pass into the box by Ethan White. Wallace appeared to have accidentally put the ball away but was happy with the goal nonetheless. Maxi Moralez would double the lead just two minutes later when Wallace found the midfielder splitting the defenders in the box. It was Moralez’s second goal of the season.

The win makes it two in a row for NYCFC and third in their last four games. It is a welcome result before a tough road trip which will take them across the country from Utah to Orlando before returning home at the end of the month.
