No York: Locals Excluded From USMNT Roster

When coach Bruce Arena announced the United States’ roster for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers this month, the biggest surprise was a name that was not announced. Despite his apparent recent rise among the national team ranks, Red Bull New York captain Sacha Kljestan, last year’s MLS assists leader, was omitted from the final 23-man roster.

In what can be considered a surprise on the other end of the spectrum, former Red Bulls captain Dax McCarty was included by Arena. The defensive midfielder was shockingly traded to the Chicago Fire during the offseason in exchange for $400,000. An appearance by him would mark his first since 2010.

Luis Robles, the only other local hopeful was also omitted from the team.

The US continue their push for 2018 World Cup qualification when they face Honduras and Panama on March 24th and 28th, respectively. After dropping their first two matches to Mexico and Costa Rica, these next pair can be considered “must win.”
