New York Cosmos Sign D.C. United’s Andrea Mancini

New York Cosmos announced the signing of 24-year-old Italian midfielder Andrea Mancini from MLS side D.C. United. As per club policy, the details of the deal have not been disclosed.

Mancini signed to D.C. United as a Discovery Signing in a free transfer on March 27, 2016 and appeared in a U.S. Open Cup match against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in June. “We thank Andrea for his service and wish him good luck in his future endeavors,” said Dave Kasper, D.C. United general manager and VP of soccer operations. Earlier this year Kasper praised the young player’s skill, saying, “Andrea impressed us in pre-season with his technical proficiency and tactical understanding.”

Mancini was first seen training with the Cosmos in early August, leading to rumors of a move. At the end of August, Michael Lewis of Big Apple Soccer reported that D.C. United would likely load Mancini to the Cosmos for the remainder of the season. Weeks later, the deal is now finalized as a signing rather than a loan.

Andrea Mancini, son of Roberto Mancini, the famous Italian coach who until recently managed Inter Milan, has had experience in the Inter Milan and Manchester City academies as well as playing professionally across Europe. “Andrea is a young player with good experience,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese. “He has shown great dedication in training and he will add depth to the team as we push for a strong finish to the season.”

“I’ve been training with the team for quite a few weeks and I really enjoy the coaching style and atmosphere,” Mancini said. “I’m focused on helping the team at this important time in the season.” With the departure of Hunter Freeman and the push towards the end of the season, Mancini is a welcome addition to New York. At only 24-years-old, he could end up being a part of the team for years to come.

The Cosmos take on Minnesota United FC this Saturday at Shuart Stadium.
