New York Cosmos Progress to Championship Final

A dramatic 2-1 win over Rayo OKC sends the New York Cosmos back to the NASL Championship Final to defend their title. A Championship win would be their third Soccer Bowl Win since joining the NASL in 2013.

The semi-final match was against one of the only two teams the Cosmos did not beat at their home stadium this season. Rayo OKC held the boys in green to a 1-1 Draw back in August of this year as well as beating the Cosmos when they hosted the New York team in July.

“I always believe that the guys are going to pull it out and be able to get the victory, but it wasn’t easy,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese. “It was another tough game today. In four games we’ve played against them, they were all tough. But the guys believed that they could win.”

The match started with Rayo OKC on the front foot, going up 1-0 in the first half off a free kick taken by Michel and sent in by center back Futty Danso. But the Cosmos kept pushing and equalized in the 73rd minute. Ayoze’s corner kick to the near post and finished off by Juan Arango heading it in past goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes.

“As a team, I believed that if we kept pushing and playing the way we were, we were going to get a goal,” said Cosmos goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer.

Energized by the goal, the Cosmos struck again in the final minute of the match. Arango rushed to get to the end of an Ayoze through ball and crossed it into the box. Yohandry Orozco was there to blast in into the net and win the game for New York.

But the celebration is brief. The Cosmos will now have to focus on the Championship Final against Indy Eleven. The Eleven beat out the Cosmos for the Spring Season Title this year and will now look to topple them to earn their first NASL Championship.

In their three meetings this year, Indy has beaten the Cosmos twice.

“It’s going to be a tough match for us,” Savarese said. “Each year is unique. This year so many different things shaped us to be who we are as a team.”

The Championship Final will take place on Sunday, November 13th at Belson Stadium on Long Island.
