New York Cosmos Clinch Playoff Spot With Win Over Fort Lauderdale

After a 2-0 win defeat of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers as Shuart Stadium, the New York Cosmos have clinched a playoff spot for their fourth-straight year in NASL. The team has won the Championship twice before and will be looking to win their third Soccer Bowl Championship.

“It’s good to know we achieved something important,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese. “We have a spot in the postseason. But we still have four more matches to play. We have to continue to grow, and we have to finish strong in order to have positive momentum.”

The NASL playoffs are made up of four teams which will compete in single-elimination semi-finals and then progress to the Championship. The four teams that make up the playoff bracket will be the Spring Season winners (Indy Eleven), the Fall Season winners, and the other two highest-placing teams in the Combined Season standings. This Cosmos win assures the team that they will fall into one of the three remaining slots, but they have not yet clinched the top of the Fall Season. They are currently 7 points above FC Edmonton on the Fall Season table and 8 points above the same team for the Combined Season standings.

Their win over the Strikers also equals the NASL unbeaten home streak with 18 consecutive games. The record is shared with the 2014-2015 Cosmos and a stretch from 2012-2014 by the Carolina RailHawks. The Cosmos have one more home match this season before the playoffs and a chance to break that unbeaten record when they host Miami FC on October 22nd.

The game also marked the 100th club appearance for left back Ayoze, two games after team captain Carols Mendes reached the same milestone. “I’m very happy and honored to play my 100th game here,” said Ayoze. “It was great to get the win, too.”

Next week the Cosmos travel to Canada to take on Ottawa Fury FC and try to extend their lead.
