New York Cosmos Break Perfect Home Streak With Draw To Rayo OKC

After 10 wins at Shuart Stadium throughout the 2016 NASL seasons, the New York Cosmos were brought to their first draw on Sunday. Visiting team Rayo OKC managed to hold the New York side 1-1 through a lackluster performance by both teams.

“We didn’t get the win and the full three points, but this is an important point accumulated in the Fall Season,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese. “Every point counts. Of course we want to win games at home, but getting a point is certainly better than nothing.”

The single point, however, was not enough to keep the Cosmos on the top of the Fall Season table. Now with 14 points, New York sits behind  Indy Eleven and FC Edmonton, both with 16.

Both goals came in the first half, with Rayo OKC getting on the scoresheet first. Billy Forbes raced down the left side of the field and his cross into the box was easily tapped in by Greek International Georgios Samaras in the 4th minute. The Cosmos found an equalizer in the 38th minute when Lucky Mkosana, who was the bright spot for the Cosmos throughout the match, drew a penalty in the box. Adam Moffat stepped to the spot and slammed the ball past Daniel Fernandes.

“It was a 1-on-1 situation, so I felt like I had to take him on,” Mkosana said of the play that drew the foul. “I took my chance and it worked out.”

Goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer praised his team’s effort in the second half, saying, “We got better as the game went on. Towards the end of the first half and for much of the second half we controlled the game. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do what we needed to get the three points.”

That effort will need to get better to push New York to the top of a very tight table race as the season continues. With floundering road performances, the confidence to gain three points at home will be needed to keep their playoff hopes alive.
