Jason Hernandez Signs with Toronto FC

Former NYCFC defender Jason Hernandez has signed with the MLS club Toronto FC. Hernandez is an league veteran who played with NYCFC since their launch in 2015.

“We are pleased to add another experienced, veteran defender in Jason Hernandez,” said Toronto General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “Jason is a player we have watched for some time. With his experience in MLS including the playoffs and his familiarity with some of our current players we felt he would be a welcomed addition to the club.”

Hernandez has a long history with MLS, starting with the Metrostars in 2005. The majority of his career was spent with the San Jose Earthquakes between 2008 and 2014. In totality he has played over 270 MLS games, bringing incredible experience to Toronto FC.

Over the last two seasons Hernandez played 57 games for NYCFC, with 52 of them starts. Midway through 2016, Hernandez saw his playing time decrease in favor of incoming defenders such as Maxime Chanot. At the end of the season, Hernandez wasn’t picked up and was a free agent for other teams to grab.
